This summer, I watched the acclaimed show The Wire from start to finish. I was always interested in the show - and had even started it once or twice, but it is enveloping - you cannot leave it on while doing other things and appreciate it. So, I needed to wait until summer to see it. The show is incredible, and I highly recommend it. I think the biggest lesson that weaves its way through character arcs and story lines - is to listen. The cop who gets to know the people on his or her beat is better for it, personally and professionally. The journalist who takes the time to get to know his or her subject creates stronger, more resonant work and has personal connections for future stories. The teacher who learns the stories of their students, can help them overcome the baggage they bring to school. The drug dealers who watch their community can identify who the cops are and avoid arrest (Observation skills aren't just for idealistic optimists). The best, or most motivated observers often navigate their world with the greatest success.
